UCLA Personal Statements

The following advice is meant to motivate and organize you.

  • Your accomplishments, your opinion, you’re important!
  • Your answers to this questionnaire are the best tool you’ve got to show us what you have to offer to our UCLA community.
  • Start early, give yourself some time to think about your topic, and carefully consider the rationale for each question.
  • Don’t forget to provide plenty of time for changes! Revise for clarity in substance and style by reading your work aloud to others.
  • Pay attention to the rules of correct grammar and spelling
  • Don’t forget to spell check!

Personal Insight Questions

Personal Insight Questions should be written in an informal style. Don’t use too many big words or complicated sentences. Be sure to include examples to support your points.

I am engaged in programs that increase diversity within my chosen field. My research focuses on underserved populations. I produce art and cultural work that reflects diverse communities and voices not often seen in the humanities.

I am going into my chosen specialty because I love science and I want to help people. My interest in science was sparked by my dad, who taught me how to use a microscope when I was young.

He also showed me how to dissect things, and he always told me that if I wanted to be a doctor, I had to study hard. I hope that I can help people as much as my father helped me.
